My office has recently received a number of calls about the Utilities Undergrounding Program in northwest Clairemont, so I thought I would take this opportunity to clear up any questions or concerns.

The Utilities Undergrounding Program has separated the construction into two project blocks. Project Block 6J is west of Clairemont Mesa Blvd and mostly north of Luna Avenue. Project Block 6I is south of Luna Avenue between Morena Blvd and Clairemont Drive. These two projects will underground 7 miles of utilities and affect over 1,000 Clairemont homes.

The construction schedules are as follows:

Project Block 6JProject Block 6I
Construction Start: December 2009
Panel and trench work: Complete
Cabling, cut-overs and streetlights: Sep. 2010 – Jan. 2012
*Cabling estimated to be complete by Sep. 2011
Overhead line removal: Spring 2012
Street resurfacing: 2013
Construction Start: January 2011
Panel and trench work: Jan. 2011 – Dec 2011
Cabling, cut-overs and streetlights: Jan 2012 – Oct 2012

Overhead line removal: Winter 2012
Street resurfacing: 2014

Project Block 6J: After all trenching operations were completed, the cabling portion of the work began. Cabling involves technicians placing new utilities lines in the new conduits so that the new lines can be brought into service. Once that occurs, the process to “cut-over” customers from overhead to underground services will begin. Once customers have been cut-over, the overhead lines will be removed. The City anticipates this process will move very swiftly and will cause minimal disruptions and distractions.

Project Block 6I: Crews have completed 95% of panel work, where they prepare the electrical panel at your home to receive underground service. The trench work is approximately 70% complete in this block. The City asks for your patience as they complete this work, as it can be disruptive and distracting.

I want to assure all residents in these areas of Clairemont that the streets will be resurfaced after the entire project block is completed. The current condition of the streets is only temporary until the entire project is finished in 2013 and 2014 and the utilities have been tested and are functioning properly.
