The Met Church Lends Support to Clairemont Schools
By Lisa De Marco
When Kaki Johnson, Interim Director of Children’s Ministries at the Metropolitan Community Church, heard about the needs of some of the students at a neighborhood school she knew it was a great opportunity to teach a hands-on lesson about helping others.
“The kids in our Rainbow Sunday School have such big hearts, they were excited to help,” exclaimed Kaki. They made posters asking the congregation to bring in donations and collected over 50 notebooks, 35 boxes of crayons and lots of erasers and glue sticks. Using money they raised the group then went on a shopping spree to buy 20 backpacks to pack everything in.
Danielle Clark, the principal of Riley/Unified Day/New Dawn & Marcy, an alternative special education school here in Clairemont, was thrilled when the backpacks and supplies were delivered. “This never happens to us!“ she proclaimed.
The Metropolitan Community Church recently celebrated their 41st anniversary here in San Diego, but the church is relatively new to Clairemont. After 6 years in a temporary home in Hillcrest, “The Met®” moved into their new church home on Denver Street just off Clairemont Drive in October of 2009. “We are proud to be part of Clairemont and are working hard to establish ourselves as good neighbors and a community resource,” says Pastor Dan Koeshall.
The Rainbow Sunday School classes are already planning their 2nd Annual Trunk or Treat event to be held in the church’s parking lot on Saturday, October 29 at 6:30 pm. Friends and families from the community are invited to attend this safe and fun event. For more information visit www.themetchurch.org or call 619-521-2222.
