Familiar favorites top the list of San Diego’s 2011 most
popular names, according to Sharp Mary Birch Hospital for Women & Newborns
which delivers more babies than any other hospital in California.
Alexander made a big jump from 8th in 2010 to the 2nd most
popular name for boys in 2011.
5 favorites from last year completely dropped off this
year’s list including Joshua, Andrew, Gabriel, Mason and Anthony which were
replaced by 2011 favorites Ethan, Aiden, Daniel, Benjamin and Jayden. For the 3rd
year in a row, Jacob was the top name for boys in San Diego. According to the
Social Security Administration, Jacob has been the number one name in the
entire country since 1999.
For girls, the top 10 list had fewer changes. 3 names at the
bottom of the list last year: Ava, Chloe and Audrey were replaced by Natalie,
Abigail and Avery for 2011. The top 3 names in 2010, Sophia, Isabella and
Olivia, are still the top favorites this year however the order switched up a
bit with Olivia moving from number 3 to number 1.
Emily was number 7 in San
Diego but has been the number 1 pick nationally from 1996 until 2009 when
Isabella became the preferred choice for girls’ names in the United States.
