When people ask me how I like working at City Hall, it seems to be a surprise when I tell them how much I enjoy my job. I love having the opportunity to represent Clairemont, and I love solving the problems that are brought to my office. It really is an honor to be able to make things better for our community.

I want to thank many of you who contact my office and let us know the areas in Clairemont that can be improved. We frequently get calls about the poor condition of some roads in our neighborhood, and like Councilman Gloria, having “sexy streets” is important to me. In January, the City’s Streets Division resurfaced more than a mile and a half of Morena Boulevard, from McGraw Street to Tecolote Road. Fortunately, this is only the beginning. At Mayor Sanders’ annual State of the City address he announced that there is another $100 million dollars set aside to fix San Diego’s aging infrastructure. My office is working on getting the schedule of streets to be resurfaced in District 6 during 2012. To inquire about a specific street, or to report a pothole, please call (619) 527-7500.

Another issue that is close to my heart, both as a mother and as a former foster youth, is helping local foster children. On the 16 th  of this month, I will be holding a Community Coffee and Cocoa hour for all members of my district. This is an open, informal forum where I will be answering your questions and addressing issues that are important to you. For this coffee, my office has partnered with Leez PJs 4 Kids, a local nonprofit that donates pajamas to foster kids. My office is suggesting that attendees bring a pair of new or gently used children’s pajamas to the next Community Coffee and Cocoa hour.

The coffee hour will be held on Thursday, February 16 th  from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Mission Valley YMCA, located at 5505 Friars Road. If you have any questions, please call Shirley Owen in my office at (619) 533-6462.
