"Leap into College" Event Tomorrow @ Madison

Parents of current 8th and 9th graders who are future Madison High School students are invited to an informative presentation about college tomorrow, Wednesday, February 29 (Leap Day), from 6-7:30 pm.

Learn about the “a-g” diploma and college admission requirements and  how students in 8th and 9th grade can begin preparing for the college admission process.  The presentation will be in Madison's Performing Arts Center, 4833 Doliva Dr.  Please RSVP to Greg Williams, Madison Community Outreach and 21st Century Grant Coordinator, at gwilliams3@sandi.net

Topics will include:
  • A focus on SAT preparation for the lower grades.
  • Investigative methods for selecting a college major and finding California colleges and universities with appropriate programs.
  • A deeper understanding of the balance of courses, grades and test scores in the CSU and UC admission process.
  • A thorough explanation of the changing diploma requirements for students in the Class of2016, according to the recently adopted “a-g” and College, Career and Technical Education (CCTE) diploma.
Our Presenter will be Mrs. Carol Sobek. Mrs. Sobek is in her sixth year as Head Counselor at Madison High, having served 32 years as a teacher, counselor and Head Counselor in SDUSD. With particular expertise in helping students along the path to college, she was named the Outstanding High School Counselor in San Diego and Imperial Counties by San Diego State University in May 2010. As a Regional Finalist for the California League of High Schools Educator of the Year in 2008, Mrs. Sobek particularly enjoys helping first-generation college-bound students achieve their college admission, scholarship and financial aid dreams.

This  “Leap into College” program was conceived to address the adage, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!”  Students can best impact their eligibility for the university by make correct course choices beginning as early as 7th grade,  preparing for college bound tests well in advance of the junior year, and investigating choices before the November 1-30 college application “window” in the senior year. This program will equip you with parenting tools and knowledge about college!

Spanish translation will be provided.
