World Book Night April 23rd by Bernice Hand
The American Booksellers Association is reproducing an event that was very successful in Great Britain. The goal of World Book Night is to spread the love of reading by giving away half a million free books all across the country. With the sponsorship of publishers, distributors and UPS, the ABA is able to make 500,000 books available for distribution to non-readers across America. People who are avid readers have signed up to each distribute 20 books to an audience that they have chosen to target. Among them, homeless shelters, military bases, hospitals and schools.
Mysterious Galaxy Books, 7051 Clairemont Mesa Blvd., is proud to be the Western Region Captain for the inaugural U.S. World Book Night. Givers who have selected Mysterious Galaxy as their pick-up point are invited to come in and pick up their pre-selected books, meet the staff and share their plans. Book pick-up begins April 16th and continues on until April 23rd. If you are interested in becoming a giver, but missed the sign-up deadline, please contact the store at 858.268.4747 .
We will host a kickoff party for givers on Monday, April 16 from 6 to 8pm. We will serve some snacks and beverages, hand out your books and answer any questions that you might have about the distribution of your books. We will be handing out a questionnaire that you can complete after WBN and share with us via e-mail or at the after action re-cap party on April 30th. We will be recording anyone who might want to promote the event on You Tube.
Be a part of this wonderful outreach on Monday, April 23rd, as readers all across the country spread the joy of reading by giving away half a million free books. Givers across the USA will spend the evening handing out free books to their selected recipients, in non-traditional locations, with a focus on books for low and non-readers. With books like The Hunger Games, Wintergirls, Little Bee, Ender’s Game, The Kite Runner, A Prayer for Owen Meany, The Stand, and many more, lucky recipients will not be disappointed.
On April 30th from 5:30 to 7:00 pm, we invite you back to Mysterious Galaxy to share some wine, cheese and your experiences of WBN. We will share answers to our questionnaire and have some prizes for most unique, profound, funny and beautiful answers to our questions. Again, if you want to be filmed for You Tube presentations, come with make up on and ready to star in our show. If you want to stay past 7pm, enjoy the company of more book lovers and Orson Scott Card, author of "Shadows in Flight". Orson will converse with the audience and give you a pat on the back for being a giver of books on World Book Night.
