Some Days Call For A Really Good Sandwich
There are days when a large meal is more than I really want (or need!) for supper, and a sandwich can be the perfect compromise. I’ve always been a sandwich guy, and this month I discovered a surprising, must-try sandwich stop called Bite of Boston , located on Governor Drive west of Genesee Avenue. This New England-style establishment prides itself on traditional east coast submarine sandwiches, “wicked awesome clam chowda,” fried fish and clams, and a decadent lobster roll. According to the owner, there is not one ounce of phony or "processed" meat, pork, poultry or fish products anywhere inside the Bite of Boston's deli case. On my first visit, I had to sample the much acclaimed lobster roll ($12.95), which was stuffed with large chunks of Maine lobster in a very light mayo and celery mixture and sandwiched between pieces of a butter-grilled New England-style Frankfurt roll. Once you get over the price of this sandwich (it is lobster, after all), it will literally melt in your mouth. On my next visit, I sampled the Philly cheese steak sandwich ($8.95). This sandwich was large enough to serve two people with a modest appetite and was filled with a mixture of tasty sirloin steak, warm and gooey melted cheese and slices of peppers (I opted for no onions). For me, this sandwich was so memorable—flavorful, moist and filling—that I have been craving it ever since. Be sure to check the website for daily specials that include sandwiches and much more.

Speaking of sandwiches, a new Panera Bread has opened on Balboa Avenue (across from Target, site of the old Blockbuster). For weeks, we’ve all been wondering what could possibly fill that large space and, to this Chowhound’s surprise and delight, another eatery has hit the Clairemont scene! While this is very much a typical chain restaurant, they’ve done a nice job of maintaining that homey feel with warm colors, soft lighting, lots of wood, and comfy seating. On my fisrt visit, I tried the half roasted turkey and avocado BLT sandwich with a cup of the broccoli cheese soup ($7.29). The sandwich was pretty standard, layered with roasted turkey and a strip of applewood-smoked bacon on sourdough bread. The broccoli soup was rich and cheesy, just right for a chilly summer evening. My partner chose the steak and white cheddar Panini sandwich on a French baguette ($8.79). As an added bonus, Panera has an on-site bakery serving a variety of sweets and breakfast is also available.
