I was pleased to announce this summer an agreement we made that keeps 1,500 teachers, counselors and nurses in the classroom. All I wanted all year was for both the teachers’ union and the district staff to sit down and find a local solution together. We all sat down and worked it out.
With this deal parents can be reassured that there will be counselors and nurses on staff and that class size will be reasonable. We will still have all of our great programs in music and art, languages, sports and career technical programs.
We owe a debt of gratitude to our teachers for making the sacrifice of foregoing their pay raises and further reducing their pay through furlough days. I am happy that I was able to lead this effort to save our schools one more time, but I am not happy with the lack of commitment to public education in Sacramento. I will be traveling to Sacramento next month and will work with other school board presidents to fight for funding.
We will continue to do the best we can with whatever we are given. We have made huge cuts in administration to protect the classroom and I am committed keeping the classroom the top priority.
We can look forward to another exciting year of academic achievement in San Diego schools. In the meantime, enjoy your summer.
Sincerely,
John Lee Evans
President, Board of Education
