What is Lyft? It’s your friend with a car, on demand. Lyft is a smartphone app connects passengers in need of a ride, for any reason, with nearby drivers.
Drivers, who must be least 24 years old, use their own car, which must be newer and in good repair. They are screened with DMV and background checks, and Lyft has a first-of-its-kind $1million per occurrence excess liability insurance policy. Once a ride is complete, passengers are prompted to donate seamlessly through the app on their phone. The suggested donation is based on distance and typically a bit less than a cab.
Clairemont Resident Lori Sorbo is one of several locals that have become Lyft Drivers. “After being a stay at home mom for 13 years, I decided to return to work. In many jobs, the hours are not flexible enough to allow me the opportunity of making my kids’ school events, baseball and volleyball games, something that means a lot to me. After seeing the pink mustache on Facebook, I inquired about the job opportunity. I loved what I heard: flexible, make your own hours. On top of that I can make $15 or $20 an hour PLUS tips!!! The Lyft community has been amazing. I have met wonderful people and feel like I am actually providing an awesome service throughout our community.”
The experience is more social than a cab ride. Passengers sit in the front seat and most chat with the drivers along the way. Some Lyft drivers have themed their cars, making the ride experience even more fun. Lori has turned the inside of her van into a “Candy Land,” offering candy and bottled waters to every passenger.
Lyft Celebrated its 1,000,000 ride on August 8th in its start up location of San Francisco. Lyft drivers collectively have driven in excess of 4 million miles; that’s enough to go to the moon and back 8 times! Lyft is currently available in 7 cities, Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, Chicago, Boston and DC.
