Red Door Donates Books to Whitman Elementary

A little over a year ago, the Red Door Interactive Philanthropy Committee embarked on a mission to bring brand new books to a local classroom in San Diego. Today, our mission comes to fruition as we deliver 75+ books to a deserving class at Whitman Elementary School in Clairemont.

The Philanthropy Committee learned of a non-profit organization called First Book  whose goal is to provide access to new books for children in need.  Instead of donating money, we opted to sponsor a local classroom and were introduced to Suzy Aaberg’s class at Whitman Elementary. Suzy works with 30+ students in the Auditory/Oral Deaf and Hard of Hearing Program.

The Red Door Interactive Philanthropy Committee hosted a company-wide silent auction, where employees offered up everything from homemade pumpkin bread to swimming lessons, and raised over $500!  Through First Book’s online marketplace, Suzy’s class was able to select over 75 books to add to their classroom library! Suzy said that her class has never really had a library and the books she did have had been donated and were slightly used. She is so excited to be able to add brand NEW books and quality literature to her classroom.

The Philanthropy Committee spent last Friday cataloging the books by placing library checkout slips in each one.  Today we will be visiting Suzy’s classroom and presenting her and her class with these books that can be enjoyed for years to come.

About our philanthropy committee:
We created the Caring Hearts Philanthropy Committee, in an effort to foster a workplace that supports giving back to the community. This committee has been successful in contributing to the community by monthly visits to the Gary and Mary West Senior Wellness Center in Downtown San Diego, beach and creek clean up with San Diego Surfrider Foundation, and food drives for the San Diego & Denver Food Bank. Also, recently our Denver Office held an office space lease contest to give back to the local community in a big way. One local startup will be provided rent free office space in our downtown Denver office for 6 months. The winner will be announced at the end of October, but keep an eye out to learn more about our motivating finalists.
