Free Tax Preparation for Working Families

Congressman Scott Peters (CA-52) recently toured Social Advocates for Youth (SAY) San Diego in Clairemont and met with volunteers working in their Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) service center. VITA programs offer a free tax-filing resource to Americans with less than $52,000 in annual income.

Volunteers at each VITA site are IRS-certified and help consumers prepare their basic returns and determine their eligibility for tax credits, including the Earned Income Tax Credit and the Child Tax Credit, which they might not otherwise have known they were qualified to receive. The program also allows consumers to electronically file their returns at no cost. VITA service centers are found not just at SAY San Diego but across San Diego County. For more information on SAY San Diego see here and for more on VITA see here.

“Many families are unaware of the resources available to help them complete their filing and keep more money in their pockets this tax season,” Rep. Peters said. “Too many San Diegans don’t know where to turn or how they can find time to sift through the various credits and exemptions they might otherwise be eligible for. I’m proud to highlight the work SAY San Diego and the VITA volunteers are doing to help simplify this process for my constituents and not leave that additional money on the table.”

Congressman Peters serves the 52nd District of California which covers much of central San Diego County including Poway, Coronado, and large portions of the City of San Diego.
