Walk 30 Miles in 30 Days: SD Park & Rec Summer Fitness Challenge!

The City of San Diego Park and Recreation Department will host a new program this summer focusing on fitness in the City’s parks. The program starts Monday, July 14th and challenges participants to walk 30 miles in 30 days in a City park. The program also challenges swimmers to swim 20 miles in a City pool, which equates to more than a thousand laps.

“We are so excited to provide this program to the community” says Herman Parker, Park and Recreation Director for the City of San Diego. “We hope it encourages our residents to get out and visit our park sites and take advantage of the unique opportunities our parks provide. Let’s get fit San Diego!”

Challenge participants may sign up for the program from July 14th through August 1st at one of the City’s many recreation centers. The City will award participants who meet the challenge with a t-shirt that states: “I got fit in my park!”

The program is free to all participants. Participants who sign a commitment log at a recreation center will receive a free wristband that signifies their participation in the challenge. City staff will lead walks through community parks and track participant progress. Participants may also walk independently and report their progress to staff throughout the challenge period.

City parks already have many patrons who keep fit by using City parks to walk, jog, swim, etc. as part of their fitness routine. This program is designed to encourage more people to come to City parks to walk or swim with friends and family.

Clairemont is fortunate to have many parks in the neighborhood including the big ones like South Clairemont Community Park, the neighborhood "secrets" like Western Hills Park and of course right across the 5 is Mission Bay Park. There's no lack of parks to meet your fitness challenge!
