Local Student Reports on School's Thanksgiving Activities

When I think of Thanksgiving, I think of three things: giving thanks, food, and family. At TCPS' Thanksgiving Feast, all of these are involved. While other schools have the whole week off, we have the gift of costume making, cooking, and of course eating.

In the costume making part of this much loved event, the kids get to pick whether they would like to dress up as a Wampanoag Native American or a Pilgrim. I picked to be a Pilgrim, and had a blast decorating my simple but very fashionable apron and bonnet, both of which I adorned with blue yarn.

The cooking aspect of the Thanksgiving Feast is most kids’ favorite part. Spending time with the teachers and kids to bake something all of us will share is part of how close we are. To sit around for the Feast as a family, albeit of usually different genetic heritage, gives everyone, including me, something to look forward to and be grateful for.

When it came time for the Feast, we lined up in a long row of Pilgrims and Native Americans, marched in, and stood at our places to greet our neighbors and sing the two traditional songs: “Give Thanks” and “The More We Get Together”. The food was distributed by the teachers and finally, it was time to eat.

The menu included corn muffins, bread stuffing, cranberry sauce, gravy, green beans, applesauce, turkey, and pumpkin pie. My personal favorites were cranberry sauce and the stuffing.

The last part to our Feast is how we handle the leftovers. Instead of throwing it away or having the teachers take it home, we donate it to the San Diego Rescue Mission, so as to give less fortunate people a chance to have an amazing Thanksgiving meal as well.
