San Diego Mesa College is giving incoming college freshmen a chance to jumpstart their college education at a new event the college has dubbed “Jumpstart Your Success.” The free event will be held this Saturday, February 27, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on the Kearny Mesa campus.
Nearly 200 students and their families have already signed up for the event, which is intended to provide new students with a comprehensive introduction to college life that covers important information for students and their families.
But event organizers are aiming for more than that.
“This is the first event of its kind for Mesa,” said President Pamela T. Luster, who has led similar success initiatives at other colleges. “Jumpstarters will get a taste of college life, but they’ll also get to meet fellow students and interact with faculty and staff on a personal one-on-one level.”
“We want to remove the jitters most student experience on their first weeks in a college classroom, which, for an incoming freshman, can be intimidating and a barrier to success,” Luster added.
Faculty and staff are fully on board, offering more than 44 workshops and information sessions on everything from transfer and career opportunities, and financial aid to botany tours of the college’s learning gardens, fun chemistry experiments like extracting strawberry DNA, and parenting classes on how to support your college students.
Four lucky students will receive a $250 scholarship in an opportunity drawing held during lunch. Additionally, participants have an opportunity to take a tour of the campus with Mesa student ambassadors, and will be assigned their personal Peer Navigator
Saturday on the Mesa: Jumpstart Your Success is free and open to all 2016 high school seniors and continuing education transfer students planning to enroll at Mesa for Fall 2016 semester, and their families. A free lunch will be provided to all participants who register. Free parking is available in the parking structure.
