Theater Review: Sweeney Todd

By Lorie Zapf

Sweeny Todd Ensemble
Last Friday night "Sweeney Todd" opened at the Balboa Junior Theater.  I highly recommend it, it is really a great show!

It is a very talented cast; the female lead, Jazley Geovese, was a top 10 finalist in the national Ben Vereen Awards in N.Y.  There are also two Clairemont High School seniors in the production who have performed in many Clairemont High productions.  The set, costumes and orchestra are all terrific too.

Sweeney Todd is a classic musical about love, loss and revenge. The story is all at once scarily thrilling and humorously shocking. Barber Sweeney Todd returns to London after fifteen years, seeking revenge on the judge who framed him and ruined his life. The result is a dark comedy, a sinister story and an unforgettable production, with a superb Stephen Sondheim score.

This is not a typical Balboa Junior Theater production since it is "PG-13", more of an teen-to-adult show.  I took several co-workers (ranging in age from 26 - 60) last Friday and they all really enjoyed it and were impressed by the quality of the production -- for such a low price! KPBS is featuring it as an "Editor's Pick" on their website.
