The gatherings, called “Rejoicing Spirits,” are held in the church fellowship hall, located at 4271 Clairemont Mesa Blvd. in San Diego. The gatherings feature a 45-minute, “no shush” worship where parents don’t have to worry about their children talking, making noises, or wandering around. Children are free to be themselves during this informal church setting.
“This is our second time offering this service, and it includes dinner and arts and crafts afterward,” said the Rev. Nathan Allen, Associate Pastor.
Clairemont Church is one of two churches in San Diego County to recognize the need for offering an alternative form of worship for those with special needs, and is currently the only church in the city of San Diego offering this type of worship gathering.
“It started because our children’s choir director started a special needs choir and it was a big success,” Allen added. “We wanted to try and continue that outreach and connect with more people.”
Families with children of all abilities are welcome, regardless of church background, if any.

Since 1954, Clairemont Church has been a community of faith characterized by Grace, Mercy, and Love. All who have heard the teaching, preaching, and singing that happens here have heard words of forgiveness and peace. All who have visited the church campus in need have been fed, clothed, and cared for. All who have walked through these doors have encountered a relationship with a loving God and a loving group of people. Grace… Mercy… Love… this is Clairemont Church; a member congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
